Shaped like a number 7, with the Caribbean Sea on one side and the Nichupte Lagoon on the other, the purpose built resort of Cancun is one of Mexico's favourite holiday hotspots. This vibrant destination offers a wealth of powder white beaches, beautiful eco parks, first class spa resorts, lively nightlife, and ancient sites.
Cancun is a sprawling resort that divides into two parts - the hotel zone with its long swathe of beach and plentiful shopping malls, restaurants and nightspots, and the downtown area with its local cantinas and markets.
No holiday to Cancun would be complete without absorbing its rich cultural heritage - the nearby Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza and Tulum are a must-see, as too is the ancient community of Puerto Morales and its iconic lighthouse and National Marine Park.
Cancun enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round and distinct wet and dry seasons. June and July are the hottest months with the temperature gauge hitting the mid 30's, January the coldest at 23C, and September the wettest month with over 229mm of rainfall. The wet season runs from May to October and the dry season from November to April.
There are lots of things to do in Cancun. Take a 20 minute ferry ride to the Isla Mujeres, home to the snorkelling hotspot of El Garrafon beach. Visit the local wildlife and colourful flora and fauna at Xcaret Eco Park, and the world's largest natural aquarium at Xel-Ha. Family friendly fun includes swimming with dolphins at Dolphinaris Cancun, getting up close to the marine life at the Interactive Aquarium, and water-based fun at Wet n Wild Cancun. Indulge in retail therapy in Kulkan Place and La Isla Shopping Village, or shop for authentic Mexican handicrafts at Mercado 28 flea market. Cancun's plentiful golf courses are a hit with golfers and boast some of Mexico's most stunning scenery as a backdrop.
The cuisine in Cancun combines traditional Mexican cooking with international flavours. Tuck into taco and burritos in Mexican cantinas, eat on the go on fast food, or enjoy Five-Star dining in top-class international restaurants. And, of course, no meal would be complete without a Corona beer or a shot of the national spirit, tequila.
Cancun's nightlife is renowned for being some of the best in the world. Enjoy everything from laser and light shows and amazing acrobats, to live acts and world-famous DJs at the likes of The City, Coco Bongo, and Daddy 'O. While bars like Senor Frog's blend singing and dancing with a lively atmosphere, and the cosmopolitan crown flood to exclusive nightspots like Shah and Mandala.
