Koh Samui

White sandy beaches, crystal clear seas, lush green hills and mystical temples – that's Koh Samui holidays in a nutshell. Relax in peace and tranquillity in your own private bungalow, or check in to a 5-star haven with lush gardens and lavish pools. Spas in Koh Samui are especially good and many hotels have excellent ones in-house. If you happen (or plan) to be in town when the moon is full, you won't be able to miss the famous Full Moon Party. Tear yourself away from the pristine beaches and you'll discover a mesmerising world of cascading waterfalls, dense forests and hidden Buddhas. Families seeking idyllic beaches, groups of friends in search of vibrant nightlife and couples looking for a tropical escape – holidays to Koh Samui suit just about everyone. With flights from Bangkok to Koh Samui taking less than two hours, it's the perfect extension to a stay in the Thai capital.

Best time to go

The best time to take Koh Samui holidays is during the dry season, from February to late June.

Things to do

It's tempting to park beneath a palm tree for the duration of holidays to Koh Samui, but you wouldn't want to stay put. The beaches and water sports are wonderful, but head inland and you'll discover much more. The Big Buddha is one of the main attractions but it's also worth the trek to the mystical Secret Buddha Gardens. Don't miss the Friday night market at Bophut's Fisherman's Village for street food and souvenirs. Families and grown-ups alike love day trips to Koh Samui's many attractions, which include a butterfly park, tiger zoo and water park. There's a huge array of watersports here, as well as plenty of sports on dry land – think golf, quad biking and watching Thai boxing. And some of Samui's spas are so good, that they're attractions in their own right.

Food and drink

Food is big news on Koh Samui holidays. As well as the seafood and spices for which Thailand is famous, Samui also takes influence from Malay, Indonesian and Indian flavours. Try satay sticks straight from a food stall, or take a table at a restaurant with a gorgeous beach view. It's not all local dishes here though – you'll find international names like McDonalds and Starbucks, too.

In the evening

Koh Samui comes to life after dark. There's a heady mix of cabaret shows, karaoke bars, pubs, clubs and ladyboy shows. And if the timing's right, you'll get to join in with one of the planet's most famous parties: the Full Moon bash. If you prefer your evenings a little more sedate, simply enjoy dinner beneath the stars.

Health and entry requirements

It is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct travel insurance and vaccinations and / or special medication for your destination. Please consult your GP for advice at least one month ahead of travel. It is essential that you meet the visa and passport requirements for your chosen destination. Visit the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (http://www.fco.gov.uk) website for up to date entry requirements listed by country.
