Best time to go

Rio is a year round destination, but it's especially popular with those in search of winter sun between October and May.

Things to do

First up, take a cable car to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain and see the stunning views of the city (best viewed at sunset.) Next, get up close to the spectacularly tall Christ the Redeemer statue, perched high and mighty atop Mount Corcovado; look down from here to see another breathtaking vista of the city. Shop for swimwear, surf gear, jewellery and pretty crafts in the city's many shops and markets. Learn about Brazil's football fanaticism at Maracanã Stadium, have a go at samba dancing and see eye popping carnivals. It's worth heading out of town to discover the lush vegetation and cascading waterfalls of the area's mystical jungles. The mountainous terrain is excellent for hand gliding and hiking and the coastline excellent for snorkelling, fishing and other water based sports. When it comes to lounging around and people watching, head to the famous beaches of Copacabana and Impanema or find a sunny spot in the gorgeous Botanical Gardens.

Food and drink

As you'd expect from any capital city, Rio is packed with a variety of eateries offering food from all around the world. Still, it would be a shame to come here and not sample the local cuisine; a tantalising mixture of fresh seafood and meat-based dishes. Try it in street stalls or at upscale restaurants. There are plenty of casual cafes too, where you can grab beer and snacks and soak up the atmosphere. Don't miss the juice bars, where you'll be able to choose from an amazing menu of refreshing tropical fruits. And try the caipirinha - it's the local rum cocktail that's best served ice cold, on the beach.

In the evening

It should come as no surprise to learn that nightlife in Rio is electric. After those beautiful sunsets, the city comes to life with the beat of samba, colourful carnivals and buzzing clubs. Brazilians really know how to party and Rio is arguable the party capital of the world.

Health and entry requirements

It is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct travel insurance and vaccinations and / or special medication for your destination. Please consult your GP for advice at least one month ahead of travel. It is essential that you meet the visa and passport requirements for your chosen destination. Visit the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (http://www.fco.gov.uk) website for up to date entry requirements listed by country.
