|Days 8 - 11||Amman - Regency Palace|
Arrive today at the airport, where you will be met by your representative and transferred to your hotel for a one-night stay. Meet your group at 6pm this evening for the real adventure to begin. However if you happen to arrive early highlights include the citadel with mesmerising views of Amman, the Jordan Museum, and the Roman Theatre in the centre of downtown of Amman. Head out for an optional group dinner or perhaps explore on your own and enjoy a coffee and an arayes, also known as a toastie filled with spicy mincemeat.
Once you've tucked into a tasty breakfast journey down the Desert Highway to reach Wadi Rum, a rugged landscape of spectacular sandstone mountains which stand tall among the desert floor. On arrival meet your Bedouin hosts and enjoy a browse around the visitor's centre before lunch. Take a jeep ride into the Rum and head on a tour which includes a visit to several of Wadi Rum's distinctive rock formations and the opportunity to marvel at the breathtaking desert landscapes. Meet back up with your Bedouin friends and hop on a camel to reach your traditional tent situated deep within Wadi Rum. Spend your evening and overnight at one of the many scattered camps here.
Marvel at the pretty sunrise at your desert camp this morning and check out a few more of the local Wadi Rum sites. Make your departure from Wadi Rum mid-morning for the city of Aqaba on the Red Sea. On arrival check into your hotel for a one-night stay and head out with your leader for a brief orientation of Aqaba. A must-see is the small Ottoman Mamluk Fort, where Lawrence of Arabia famously rode to Cairo. Take yourself down to the beach for a spot of sunbathing or try out snorkelling around the beautiful coral reefs just south of the town.
Spend time chilling out this morning in Aqaba before you travel to the fabled city of Petra. Until 1812 this site remained unknown to the Western world but then was discovered by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. You will probably recognise this phenomenal ancient site from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Later check into your hotel and discover the quaint little village, perhaps ask your leader about Little Petra or taking a local cooking class. Your leader will get you started with many sneak peaks of the city but remember that you have a guided tour to look forward to tomorrow morning and all afternoon.
Regularly cited as the world's '8th Wonder', Petra is the jewel of Jordan and the lost city of the biblical Nabateans. Take in the most striking sight of the entire region today - the Treasury's glorious facade from the narrow cleft known as the Siq. Your guide will lead you to explore the old Roman road, amphitheatre, and numerous old tombs, and then you are free to roam. Perhaps head up to the Monastery and make a memorable day exploring this extraordinary destination. Enjoy a light lunch in the on-site cafe. Spend one night here when you check in to your hotel.
Depart after breakfast this morning and head for the ancient Crusader castle Shobak, which will catch your attention from the moment you notice it. Take a walk to the site and discover a small chapel, original gatehouse, and find where the dark passage leads. Continue on to the ancient village of Dana, set on the edge of the Dana Biosphere Reserve, where locals sell unique silver jewellery and charms. Drive on to Madaba and visit the Greek Orthodox Church of St George and observe the impressive mosaic map of the Holy Land. Arrive in Amman late this afternoon, check in to your hotel, and head out for an evening meal.
On Day 7 you will leave Amman for a short drive north to Jerash, which was once one of the grandest ancient Roman cities in the world. Its striking collection of archways and theatres, baths, public buildings, and colonnaded streets are ideal for a morning of exploration. Next drive to the shores of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth, and take a dip. Spend time relaxing here and take some beautiful photos. Afterwards you will return to Amman for the evening and spend your final night at one of the many bars and restaurants in the city.
