Your holiday begins with a transfer to Colombo, where you will check in to your chosen accommodation. You will spend this afternoon on an insightful sightseeing tour of Sri Lanka's capital. While you're here discover the Fort, Galle Face Green, the Pettah, and enjoy a visit to Gamgarama temple, Cinnamon Gardens, and Independence Square. Spend overnight in Colombo.
Depart Colombo today and drive to reach Giritale, where you will check into your chosen hotel in preparation for an afternoon visit to Polonnaruwa; a beautiful 11th-century city compact in size. Tuck into a hearty included breakfast before you set off to explore this spectacular place; home to many 12th-century stone sculptures, an old irrigation system with huge tanks, and the Gal Vihara. The Gal Vihara comprises three enormous Buddha figures - one reclining, one standing, and one sitting. The statues have been revered as being amongst the most sacred monuments of Sri Lanka. Uncover palace ruins, great bas-reliefs, and friezes. Spend time at leisure exploring the site, before later returning to Giritale and spending the night.
As you leave Giritale continue your drive onwards to Sigiriya - the elevated and mysterious 5th-cerntury fortress ruins of King Kasyapa, where you'll be able to view the pretty frescoes. Marvel at the 'Lion Rock', a citadel of the unusual beauty rising 200 metres from the scrub jungle. Find that a moat, rampart, and extensive gardens ring the base of the rock. Next on the list, visit the impressive Dambulla Rock Temple; a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most attractive of Sri Lanka's cave temples. The five caves with over 2,000 square metres of stunning painted walls and the ceiling is the biggest area of paintings in the world. As you leave Dambulla, your final stop of the day is Matale en route to Kandy. Sri Lanka has always been renowned for its spices and unique spice gardens located all across the country. The biggest of them can be found around Matale and with a guide, you'll see first-hand how cinnamon, cardamom, curry leaves, peppercorns, saffron, and other exotic spices are grown in the wilderness and processed for consumption. Stay overnight in Kandy.
A visit to the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens is on your itinerary this morning. This place was once only exclusively reserved for Kandyan royalty. Back in Kandy, visit the lake, colourful bazaar, Ceylon Tea Museum, and lapidary workshop. Later in the evening, visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic and afterwards enjoy a cultural show featuring traditional Sri Lankan dancing. Spend your final night in Kandy.
Your tour will come to an end after breakfast. An included transfer will take you to the airport where you fly onwards to the Maldives.
