South Africa’s Garden Route stretches for over 200 kilometres along the country’s south coast and is famed for its natural beauty and coastal vistas, mountains, wildlife and flora. On this new tour you’ll visit some of the highlights, such as the West Coast National Park, home to stunning scenery and 250 bird species, and Cape Aghullas – Africa’s most southerly point where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. Travel part of Route 62 – the longest wine route in the Western Cape – to the ‘ostrich capital’ of Oudsthoorn. You’ll also see the Little Karoo at the base of the Outeniqua Mountains as well as enjoying some time in the vibrant city of Cape Town.

Day 1 - Uk to Cape Town

After taking Saga's included UK door-to-door travel service to the airport, fly overnight to Cape Town.


Day 2 - Cape Town-Langebaan

Arrive at Cape Town and transfer to Langebaan, where you’ll stay for the next two nights at the Protea Saldanha hotel. The town of Langebaan lies along the shores of a lagoon on the west coast, just an hour away from Cape Town. It’s known no only for the many species of migratory and resident birds found here, but for the wild flowers that provide a stunning spectacle when in bloom.

Situated on the waterfront, facilities at the locally rated 4-star Protea Saldanha Hotel include a restaurant, bar lounge, outdoor swimming pool and mini golf course. Each of the 60 rooms features a telephone, television, safe, tea and coffee-making facilities, hairdryer and free Wi-Fi.


Day 3 - Langebaan

Set off this morning for an excursion to the West coast National Park Reserve. In addition to the many species of birds to be found here, the park is known for a variety of plants including ‘fynbos’ which are particular to South Africa’s Cape region and can range from the stunning Protea to orchids, irises and even members of the carrot family! The reserve is also known for its various antelope species.

After your visit perhaps treat yourself to lunch, and enjoy the afternoon at leisure to relax. Look forward to dinner at your hotel this evening.


Day 4 - Langebaan-Oudtshoorn

Travel along part of Route 62 this morning as you head for Oudsthoorn. This ‘wine route’ takes in some 30 wineries along its length as well as beautiful scenery.

Pause en route for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing to Oudtshoorn and the locally rated 3-star Protea Hotel Oudtshoorn Riempie Estate where you will stay for the next two nights. Reminiscent of a farm setting, the hotel facilities include a restaurant, bar, and outdoor swimming pool. Each of the 39 bedrooms are contained within thatched air-conditioned chalets and feature a television, telephone, tea and coffee-making facilities and free Wi-Fi.


Day 5 - Oudtshoorn

Your day starts with the visit to the Cango Caves – vast caverns thought to extend over five kilometres and made up of a series of ‘halls’ with impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations. Please note: this excursion is fairly strenuous and involves a one kilometre walk, with 416 steps, on a tour which lasts about one-and-a-half hours.

Afterwards, visit the Cango Ostrich Farm, where you can enjoy lunch and a tour of the farm. Oudtshoorn is sometimes referred to as the ‘Ostrich Capital of the World’, due to its ostrich farming history which began in the mid 19th century when these impressive birds were farmed for their feathers. Today look forward to learning about the history and farming practices, see how the eggs are incubated and chicks cared for, plus an opportunity to feed the ostriches.

Afterwards, return to your hotel where you can relax over a pre-dinner gin tasting before enjoying a typical bar-b-que around the hotel pool.


Day 6 - Oudtshoorn-Graaff-Reinet

Look forward to a scenic drive to the town of Graaff Reinet, pausing en route for lunch. Graaff-Reinet is one of the Eastern Cape’s oldest towns and is home to some 200 buildings regarded as national monuments. It lies close to the Camdeboo National Park and the Sneeuberg Mountains which are to found in the vast geographic region known as the Karoo.

Upon arrival settle into the locally rated 5-star Drostdy Hotel where you stay for the next two nights. This comfortable hotel has its origins in the early 19th century and offers a contemporary feel with traditional and elegant furnishings. Facilities include two restaurants, a bar, wine shop, outdoor swimming pool and spa. (charges apply). The 48 bedrooms are situated in a series of ‘courts’ and feature air-conditioning, a television, safe, tea and coffee-making facilities, and free Wi-fi. Enjoy some time at leisure before dinner at your hotel this evening.


Day 7 - Graaf-Reinet

Enjoy some free time to explore the town of Graaf-Reinet this morning, perhaps visiting the town’s museum comprising four early 19th century buildings housing a variety of collections relating to the local area and culture.

This afternoon travel to the Valley of Desolation which lies on the Camdeboo National Park, known for its breathtaking landscape. The Valley of Desolation offers dramatic views of the rock columns which rise up against a backdrop of far reaching and dramatic views over the Great Karoo. Enjoy dinner at your hotel this evening.


Day 8 - Graaf-Reinet - Knysna

Depart your hotel and embark on a long but rewarding and scenic journey along the coast to Knysna. Pause for lunch at Storms River in Tsitsikamma National Park, a conservation area of ancient forests. Rivers have forced their way through the mountains to the sea here, creating spectacular gorges and waterfalls.

Perhaps enjoy a stroll in the park before your journey continues to the locally rated 4-star Premier Moorings Hotel where you will stay for the next two nights. The hotel is situated amid indigenous woodland gardens on the secluded banks of the Knysna Lagoon, three kilometres from the town centre. Facilities include a restaurant, cocktail bar/lounge, outdoor swimming pool with poolside bar and internet access (extra charge). Each bedroom is air conditioned and has a television, telephone, tea and coffee-making facilities, minibar, hairdryer and safe.


Day 9 - Knysna

Visit Monkey Land this morning.

This primate sanctuary opened in 1998 and works with the South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance. This means the future of all primates at the sanctuary is assured and those animals that have lived their lives in cages are rehabilitated for release into the sanctuary. Look forward to walking through the sanctuary where the monkeys are free roaming, in the company of a ranger. You’ll also learn about some of the 700 primates that live here. Please note: while the animals are free roaming and may come within close range the sanctuary have a strict policy of not touching the animals.


Day 10 - Knysna-Arniston

Depart for the seaside village of Arniston, stopping en route for lunch.

Spend the next two nights at the locally rated 4-star Arniston Spa Hotel. The hotel is next to an old fishing village, surrounded by beaches and nature reserves. Bedrooms have a private balcony, satellite television, tea and coffee-making facilities and Wi-Fi access. Facilities include a restaurant, bistro, bar, swimming pool and spa (treatments at extra cost). Enjoy dinner at your hotel this evening.


Day 11 - Arniston

Enjoy a morning tour of Cape Agulhas – Africa’s most southerly point, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet and many ships have been wrecked. The British vessel Arniston, which gave the town its name, went down in 1815. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure, with dinner at your hotel this evening.


Day 12 - Arniston - Cape Town

Depart Arniston today as you head for Cape Town, travelling via Hermanus. Stop here and enjoy some leisure time to explore independently. Perhaps walk around the town, visit one of the museums in the old harbour area or treat yourself to a coffee. Hermanus is also regarded as one of the world’s best places for watching whales from land.

Afterwards continue your journey to Franschhoek, travelling into the winelands where you can enjoy a late lunch and a wine tasting.

You’ll arrive in Cape Town later afternoon where you’ll stay for the next two nights at the locally rated 4-star Commodore Hotel, situated on the popular Victoria & Albert Waterfront. Facilities at the hotel include a restaurant, bar and lounge area, outdoor swimming pool and gym. Each of the 236 air-conditioned bedrooms features a television, telephone, tea and coffee-making facilities.

Perhaps treat yourself to dinner at one of the restaurants to be found in the waterfront area.


Day 13 - Cape Town

There’s a full day tour of the Cape Peninsular today – an arm of land which extends into the Atlantic. During your visit enjoy a brief funicular ride to a decommissioned lighthouse that first blinked its warning light across the southern ocean in the 1850’s. You will also explore the Cape of Good Hope, a rocky headland on South Africa’s Atlantic coast and a place of special interest and significance to sailors.

Later, visit Simonstown where you can enjoy lunch. During the day you can also look forward to an island boat cruise taking in Seal Island and during which you can watch for possible sightings of Bryde whales, humpbacks, dolphins and orcas, as well as the island’s population of Cape Fur seals. There will also be a chance to visit Boulders beach, famed for its penguins, but please note an entrance fee will apply if you wish to visit the beach.

Return to your hotel before enjoying a farewell dinner at a waterfront restaurant this evening.


Day 14 - Cape Town-UK

Enjoy the morning at leisure before travelling to the airport for your return overnight flight to the UK.


Day 15 - UK

Arrive in the UK the following morning for your included door-to-door travel service.
